What Are Affiliate Programs?

What Exactly Are They?

The simplest way to describe affiliate programs is…. you promote and sell someone else’s product or service and receive a percentage of the sale price as your commission or a pre-set amount as your share.

As a new entrepreneur just entering the online business world, affiliates can be one of the safest and fastest way to creating income at home. Plus affiliates programs are advantageous both to the affiliate promoting the products and to the owner of the program who is building a sales force for his or her business.

Affiliate Programs – Some Advantages

You do not have to create or have your own product. You will be promoting someone else’s product or service.

In many cases you do not even need to have your own website. Many affiliate programs furnish you with a website which is already to go and has your affiliate codes built into it so you get credit for the sales. Another option is where you have your own site and promote affiliate products that are related to your theme or interests. For example, you have a cooking web site where you could promote affiliate products from Amazon involving recipes or cookware.

Affiliate programs relieve you of some of the headaches involved with owning, selling and processing your own products. This is especially critical when your are just starting out and you might have a full time job and can only spend limited time on your online business. Affiliate programs allow you to confine your efforts to promoting your affiliate website. When someone orders a product from the site, the order is processed by the company that owns the product or service. They handle the payment process, delivery, customer service and anything else relative to the order. You just send them the customer through your website and it gets handled.

The only time you get involved in the process again is when you cash the commission check they send you or withdraw your commission from your PayPal account.  Ain’t that Great!

There are two other cost saving factors. Most good affiliate programs furnish you with promotional material i.e., banners and text or solo ads that you can use when you advertise. This saved you the cost of having someone creating the advertising material for you.

The other cost factor is by not having to process payments for the orders, you do not need a merchant account to process credit cards. A merchant account can cost you considerable dollars every month.

Affiliate Programs – Other Costs

Now, I want to be upfront with you. There are going to be some costs to you in promoting affiliate programs. Whether you have your own website or you are using an affiliate program furnished website, you still need to have traffic coming to it in order to make sales. Without traffic, no sales. There are many ways to create traffic to a website and they can cost money and some of it can be done for free. I will be covering that aspect of affiliate programs in a later article.
